When did you make your very first art piece? What inspired you to be a full-time artist?

Like a lot of creative people I started making art at a pretty young age, I was drawing comic strips at the age of six or seven. I was just one of those kids who loved drawing. The inspiration to become a full time artist came during a three month trip to the West Coast of America back in 2007. I met so many inspiring artists, I thought “This is it, I’m going to be a full time artist!”.

What is the art community like in Brighton and Hove? What advice would you give to aspiring local artists?

Brighton is a very relaxed and excepting city so creativity is looked upon as part of the fabric of the place. I’m not big on giving advice to other aspiring artists. Maybe that not everything you do has to be a masterpiece!

How do you deal with creative blocks?

A creative block will always pass. Try a different medium, or go for a walk. Often just sitting in front of a blank canvas/screen/piece of paper can be intimidating – walking can help release those ideas again.

How long have you been a Wild in Art artist? What is the most memorable art trail you have been involved in?

I’ve actually been collaborating with Wild In Art for over a decade! Possibly the most memorable trails have been the Shaun by The Sea trail in Brighton and Hove last summer and this one, The Big Hoot.

What is it like to be part of the Big Hoot as an artist?

The Big Hoot has been great, very relaxed and well organised. The owl sculpture is great and a pleasure to paint!

What was it like to paint the little owl, Linc, with the Rubix team? Out of the two owls you painted (Magic Eco and Linc), do you have a favourite?

I like both the owls but painting Linc with the Rubix team was loads of fun, it was interesting to relinquish some of the control and watch the piece develop.

Do you have any other big projects coming up this year?

I’m currently in Hull curating a major group show about the history of graffiti and street culture and it’s wider impact on the city and beyond. It opens July 18th and runs for two months at Humber Street Gallery in Hull.
